An attempt was made to protect the electronics from the water, but it was a poor attempt. So if the unit works for a few days you are lucky. It also makes a lot of noise. If you really want it to last more than a week, open it up, re-coat both sides of all electronics with one of many waterproof sealants, and put a ring of sealant around the LEDs so that water can't leak in around them. Water will still get into the bottom of the unit, but there are drain holes at the bottom.
